#Book #Review: Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Magic of Mothers & Daughters

I was given the great opportunity to become a part of the Chicken Soup for the Soul network. Whenever there is a new Chicken Soup book published I will have the chance to review it. I am sure that almost everyone has heard of Chicken Soup for the Soul books. But if it is new to you, Chicken Soup books are collections of short stories written by real people about their own lives or sometimes about the lives of close friends or relatives.

The sixth Chicken Soup book review is for The Magic of Mothers & Daughters: 101 Inspirational and Entertaining Stories about That Special Bond.

The book is divided into 10 sections under the following headings:

  • Healing and Second Chances
  • What Goes Around Comes Around

{My Review}

The Magic of Mothers & Daughters is my favorite Chicken Soup for the Soul book so far. I love how I can connect with all of the stories. I am one of three girls and have a really good relationship with both my mother and grandmother. The stories all bring someone to mind: my mother, sisters, grandmother, aunts, nieces. There are a lot of women in my family and this book is written for and about women.

There are stories about the trials that mothers and daughters go through and how eventually they can see eye to eye. Or how daughters who rebel against their mothers often end up wanting to be just like them. They showcase how mothers care for and celebrate their daughters and how daughter in turn do the same for their mothers.

There is also a fantastic section called  Family By Choice, where all the stories are about mothers and daughters that are not blood related. There are stories of adopted children, foster children, step-families and more. It is a great way to highlight the fact that there is more to relationships than blood only.

There was a great story called "Tent Lessons" where a mother and daughter went back-packing through Europe together and how the mother always wanted to sleep in a tent instead of a hostel. It showed their amazing adventures and disasters and how together they could deal with any situation. Also, that sometimes, it is better to listen to your daughter!

Another touching story was how a mother had to constantly choose between taking care of her two daughters or caring for her sick mother. The struggles and guilt she faced were replaced by happiness when she discovered that she had provided a great role-model for her daughters just by being their for her own mother.

My favorite story was called "Nobody Ever Told Me", It is written by a mother that was shocked by all of the feelings and love that she had for her newborn daughters and how the feelings changed and expanded as they grew up. The surprise she felt for the amount of the love that she was capable of was emphasized.

As a mother of a 2 year old and a newborn, I can completely relate to this story. You feel that you love your child with ALL of your heart and then when you have another you realize that your heart grows to accomadate the new love. It does not have to be divided.

The Magic of Mothers & Daughters is a wonderful book filled with stories for any mother or daughter. It would be an ideal Mother's Day or birthday present. Or a great gift when someone has just given birth to a little girl.
