{My Review}
I received the Couture cover in size newborn (white with black paw print trim) and the French Velour fitted diaper in size 0. The RearZ fitted and cover were the first newborn diapers that I received in the mail for my Newborn Cloth Galore & More event. As soon as I opened the package I was overcome with cuteness! I oohed and awwed for about 10 minutes and couldn't wait to show my husband. They were so tiny! They made me even more excited to have a new little baby again.
It took 4 to 5 washes to get the fitted to reach it's maximum absorbancy so I made sure to have it completely prepped before my son was born. The newborn Couture cover fits 4 to 10 pounds and the Size 0 French Velour Fitted fits 5 to 12 pounds.
French Velour Fitted
My son was 8 lbs 14 oz at birth and has gained weight quickly since coming home from the hospital. The French Velour has fit him very well since birth. He is now 2 weeks old and he still has a few snaps to go around the waist so it should fit until he is 12 pounds.
There have not been any leaks with the French Velour fitted. He really put the diaper to the test, for example he wore the fitted yesterday for 4 straight hours during a nap. The material was soaked but there were no leaks. I did notice when I removed his diaper that there were red marks in his skin from ridges in the diaper. The diaper has accordion-like elastics around the legs and they left imprints. It didn't look like they hurt but his skin did look strange after wearing it for that long.
It washed really well and had no pilling after being washed and dried numerous times. The French velour fitted maintained it's soft silky feeling even when air dried.
I love the look of the size 0 fitted. It is very trim and the multi-colored snaps are adorable. It fits under the newborn cover perfectly with no material sticking out so there is no wicking at all. With the cross-over snaps and small size I am sure it would fit a 5 pound baby easily. I think it would even work well for premature babies which is great to know as many people search for cloth diapers small enough for premies.
Couture Cover
I love the couture cover and wish I had many more like it. The double leg gussets are fantastic for keeping everything contained. There have been no poop explosions with this cover at all. I love how you can get a nice snug fit with the velcro tabs. I am normally not a fan of velcro but for newborns it is great.
The cover has laundry tabs which I am really happy about. The did not come unattached in the wash but some part of the tabs often snagged other diapers in the wash or itself which has made the edges of the cover a little ragged looking.
I tried to use the newborn cover before my son's belly button stump fell off as the cover is low cut but the edge of the cover is ridged and it seemed to hook the stump when he moved. So I waited to use it full time until the stump fell off at 7 days old.
I used the cover with the French Velour fitted with no problems at all as the fitted is very small and fits inside perfectly. I have been using it every day with infant sized prefolds and a snappi. It does take some tucking to get all of the prefold inside the cover but the leg gussets work well to keep it inside. There has been some wicking out of the back because often the prefold is not completely covered. The edge of the prefold is often at or above the edge of the cover.
I also tried pad folding a better-fit infant prefold inside the cover and it works but the prefold is a little too long for the cover. It kind of bunches on the inside but it does work and there is no wicking.
I really like this cover but wish I had some in size small as they fit 8 to 16 pounds. My son is already over 9 pounds so the newborn cover will not fit much longer and he is only 2 weeks old. So I had to wait a week to use it and then it only fit for a little over a week. I make big babies though: my first son was 8 lbs 5 oz and my second was 8 lbs 14 oz. It would be an ideal cover for anyone with small babies.
The newborn covers cost $12.99 each which is a good price. You do not need to wash the cover very often as it has a wipe clean inside so you would not need to buy many covers.
Summary
Overall the RearZ French Velour Fitted and Couture Cover is a great newborn diapering combo. The fitted and cover are very trim and do not look bulky on a newborn. The size newborn and size 0 are perfect for smaller babies. They would fit for a long time with 6 or 7 pound newborns. For my babies who are 8+ pounds, the size small and size 1 are better to have a longer lasting diaper.
Both the fitted and cover are a good price. RearZ diapers are a great way to establish your newborn stash without spending a fortune.
