The Shield Shell: Nipple Shield Case #Review #NewbornCloth Event

The Shield Shell is a specifically designed case to store contact nipple shields when not breastfeeding. The Shield Shell will protect your shields from loss, damage, debris, contamination, children and pets. They are BPA free and come in nine great colors.

Nipple shields are used as a breastfeeding aid. Often used by woman with flat or inverted nipples or with premature or weak babies. The shield provides an extra surface for the baby to latch onto. Please read more information about the pros and cons of nipple shields from KellyMom.com.

Nipple Shields

{My Review}

When my first son was born in 2010 I had a terrible time getting him to latch for breastfeeding. I had such sore nipples from a poor latch that I cringed and almost cried every time he started to suck. He wanted to sleep all of the time after coming home from the hospital and continued to lose weight at home. It turned out that I had flat nipples and he could not get a good latch.

A friend had given me a nipple shield for my baby shower after she had gone through the same thing and ended up back in the hospital with her newborn. I finally decided to use the shield after having to express into a spoon to feed my son as he was too sleepy/weak to suck properly.

You are supposed to get proper instruction and help from a lactation consultant before using a shield but I was desperate and knew that it had worked for my friend.

The nipple shield was a life saver. It worked immediately. The extra length was just what my son needed to get a good suction. He started nursing all of the time and gained back all of his weight within a week.

It is recommended to wean off of a nipple shield as soon as possible but it was working so perfectly for us that I continued to use it. My milk supply was never diminished by using the shield (one of the possible side-effects of a shield) and I continued to use a nipple shield for the entire 13 months that I breastfed my son.

I had two nipple shields. One for at home and one for in the diaper bag. I stored my shields in plastic sandwich bags for the entire time I used them. Replacing the bags as they got worn or soiled. My friend that I mentioned earlier had often wrapped hers in paper towel and ended up throwing them away by accident.

I so wish I had heard of The Shield Shell when I was breastfeeding my first! The Shield Shell is a hard plastic case that you can store your shield in when not nursing. It is BPA free and will protect them from getting dirty and from loss as the cases are so brightly colored.

I was sent a Shield Shell in turquoise to review.

It would have been great to have had one for the diaper bag with my first baby. A hard case to protect it and make it easier to find amongst all of the other baby items stuffed in there. A Shield Shell for at home would have been helpful also. I usually left it sitting on a piece of paper towel at my "nursing station". When my friend came to visit with her 2 year old, the little girl would always grab my shield off of the table and run off with it. If it was in a case I wouldn't have had to protect and clean it so often.

Surprisingly and thankfully with my new baby boy, born this June, I have not had to use a nipple shield. I bought one and brought it to the hospital with me but he latched on easily and has not had any difficulty so far. I am so happy about being able to breastfeed naturally. I think my nipples must have changed shape after nursing for 13 months, that or my new boy may have a stronger sucking ability.

I have not had to use The Shield Shell because of this but know that I will definitely recommend this product to any friends or family that use a nipple shield. It is a great invention and would make the process of using a breastfeeding aid that much easier.

  3. It's nice to learn that these exist!!! I used a shield with my first daughter (for two years) and am using one again with my 7-week-old daughter, and I always just keep them stuffed in my bra, since they don't come with a carrier.

  6. This is a great idea, with my first baby I never knew where to keep my shield, first of all so guests didn't have to see them laying out when they come to visit our new baby, and secondly I wanted to keep them clean. I would love a case for my next baby!
