{My Review}
My first reaction when I received the Tree Hugger postpartum/overnight pad in the mail was to be excited by how pretty and soft it was. Purple is my favorite color and the minkee fabric looked so luxurious.
I have used mama cloth (reusable cloth menstrual pads) only a couple times in the past as I only had a couple of cycles before becoming pregnant with my second baby. I only had a few liners so the large size of the postpartum pads were kind of a shocker. They are around the same size as heavy duty disposable pads however so I should not have been surprised.
I find the minkee postpartum pad from Tree Hugger to be VERY soft and comfortable. It does not even feel like you are wearing a pad. Much better than the crunchy disposables! The postpartum days are normally so uncomfortable especially if you have stitches like I do but Tree Hugger pads do not irritate or chafe at all. It is actually comfortable to sit down while wearing one.
The minkee fabric makes me realize how comfortable my oldest son must feel while wearing his minkee diapers and makes me want to buy a ton more for both him and I.
I had some leaking around the sides the first time I wore the pad. I think it was caused by my own human error. As I said I am new to cloth pads and I don't think I changed them often enough. I have had leaking with almost all of my cloth pads of different brands. I used disposable pads while in the hospital and like disposable diapers they can hold much more fluid than cloth. It took some adjustment to know how often I could wear a cloth pad before changing. Also each pad has a different absorbancy so I think making the change to cloth requires some trial and error. It is definitely worth it however! I have not used a disposable pad since coming home from the hospital.
I think another reason I had leaking was because of the dark color of the pad. As strange as it sounds, I think I judged when I needed to change my disposable pads by what I saw IN the pad. Too much information I know, but hey, you wouldn't be reading this far if you were squeamish.
So because the Tree Hugger pad was such a nice dark purple I could not see the blood being soaked in until it had leaked out along the two sides. The fleece backing really worked for preventing soaking through though as it was only along the sides that it leaked.
I had previously thought I would like only dark colored pads to prevent staining but I now think that having lighter colors are beneficial for adjusting the wait times between pads. Also minkee is stain-resistant so even with light colors you should not have stains.
I love the fact that Tree Hugger cloth pads are handmade by a Canadian mother. It is nice to know that much time and care has gone into creating something that is being so intimately used.
I highly recommend Tree Hugger for anyone wanting to start or add to their mama cloth stash. I will definitely be ordering some regular daytime minkee pads whenever I start my normal cycles again.

Love the fact that they won't irrate stitches! That's great.
ReplyDeleteI love this! It's incredible how much money the average woman can spend on menstrual pads each year. Thinking of all the waste makes me sad. I had reusable pads when I was in university (and that was a long time ago!) and mine need to be replaced! If you think of how long reusables can last, it's so much better on the environment and on your wallet!
ReplyDeleteI like that they don't irritate stitches, are stain resistant and are handmade with Zorb in Canada
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about trying cloth postpartum pads, and was looking at Tree Hugger pads, but hadn't found any reviews on the postpartum pads. I actually didn't realize that they were made in Winnipeg! It was also good to learn that even light colours are resistant to staining.
ReplyDeleteI have been using mama cloth for my cycles for over a year, and now that I'm pregnant I had not even considered using them for PP! I love that they don't irritate stitches, and I love that it is a WAHM business!
ReplyDeleteI learned that you need to change mama cloth more often than disposable cloth (similar to cloth diapers!)
ReplyDeleteI have a pretty light flow so I tend to keep my cloth pads on longer than most. I have never leaked through one yet.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that minkee is stain-resistant. That's one worry I've had with mama cloth, so good to know!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that we spend so much each year. I hope the government doesn't tax us on them (probably). I love that they're better on the environment. I switched over last year and wish I had 25 years ago!

I learned that Tree Hugger Cloth Pads are owned by a Canadian mother who started cloth diapering and began looking at alternatives in other areas of life.

I really like the size of these cloth pads AND the material they are made from. I always am in need of long yet soft pads. :D I also love that the company is Canadian!!

I love that these are rectangle and not rounded, allows for more coverage!
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting that you thought you'd like dark-colored pads better to avoid staining but after using them felt that light-colored ones would probably be better in terms of knowing when to change them.

I learned that these are made by a Canadian!. I think post partum pads are a great idea. I have just started using cloth pads and would love some post partum pads once we have another baby. Love the rectangle edges!!
ReplyDeletei love that they are rectangled and they look pretty fluffy i know after having a baby your period is a heavy waterfall.
ReplyDeleteI like how you pointed out that the pads are not irritating. I did not know how much is spent on pads each year. That definitely makes switching worth it!
ReplyDeleteI had no clue I spend that much on feminine products! WOW! I am going to save up because I am definitely making the switch. My DS and I can be fluff twins :)
ReplyDeleteI love that they are Canadian & cheaper than disposable pads!
ReplyDeleteI have some Tree Hugger pads. I like how I don't have to worry about adhesive sticking to me instead of my underwear when I use mama cloth.
ReplyDeleteLove that they are Canadian and look super comfortable! I did not know that minky was pretty much stain resistant and it makes sense to what you said about the leaking and the darker colour, I think I would chose a lighter colour or in between when I start out.
ReplyDeleteI learned that the minky top is stain resistant.
ReplyDeleteI love that the minky is stain resistant and that it is made with the minky fabric cause it's so soft!
ReplyDeleteI love hearing how soft and comfortable the minky is, that is fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteI learned that minky is stain resistant. I had no idea. Also I'm impressed how leak resistant the backing is.
ReplyDelete2 things i learnt is to choose a light color when it comes to mama pad and not wait to change for a long time like disposables
ReplyDeleteI'm spending HOW MUCH on disposable pads/year???? Wow.
ReplyDeletei can't believe how much i'm spending on disposable pads...and i use a daily pad so good grief!
ReplyDeleteI love that they're made by a Canadian WAHM. I also found it interesting that minky is stain-resistant! Good to know :)
ReplyDeleteLove that they won't irritate stitches!
ReplyDeleteI've been dying to try minky-topped mama cloth. I've heard great things! Love minky!
ReplyDeleteI liked that you talked about leakage. I haven't tried any mama cloth yet and I was wondering about that. Time in use will be something I will have to monitor.
ReplyDeleteWoW! These look so soft, I hate the diaper feeling of disposables. I can't wait to try these. I usually make my own out of PUL and cotton, but I am really excited to try something with different fabrics.
ReplyDeletethey look really comfy! go canada! ;) and i can relate to the stitches part!
