{My Review}
I love wool diaper covers. They are natural and breathable. Perfect for overnight! The first wool I ever tried on my oldest son were wool longies from the Allison Dawn Collection (previously Allidawn) last year. You can read my review of those longies here. Those longies got me hooked on wool. Fellow Canadian, Allison Barnes washed and lanolized those longies for me and walked me through wool cover use step-by-step. I was very nervous and unsure about wool before her introduction. I credit Allison for turning me into a wool lover.
I was very happy when she agreed to participate in my Newborn Cloth Galore & More event. I was dying to get my hands on some adorable tiny wool. Allison sent me newborn footies to review. I had never heard of footies before and thought they were an ingenious idea. It is nice to be able to use a wool cover without having to put socks on your baby.
The waist elastic in the footies is thick and strong. I was able to get a good fit right from my son's birth (8 lbs 14 oz). The waistband could fit below or above his umbilical cord stump because of the strong elastic. I waited to use the footies until it fell off at 1 week old because I didn't want the wool hooking it.
The legs were too long for my son. He was 21 inches at birth but his feet only came to the middle of the legs. That is the downside to footies rather than longies, you cannot roll up the legs to fit. At 7 weeks old his feet still don't stay in the feet of the footies well. They will reach but often when he bends his knees his feet slip out.
With the Allison Barnes Collection you can have your wool custom-made to your child's exact measurements. That is what she did for my first son's longies and they fit perfectly. The footies were made before my son was born and we just estimated what his weight and height would be based on his brother's birth size.
These footies are made with a light weight wool which is good for newborns because of the frequent diaper changes necessary. My son, now at 7 weeks old, sleeps for 7-8 hours straight at night so the prefold that I use under gets soaked. You can feel some dampness in the crotch of the footies after he wakes from one of these long stretches. To keep the dampness from soaking through Allison suggested adding extra lanolin spray to the crotch. More frequent changes would prevent this also so the footies would be great for day time use.
The matching crocheted wool hat that I received with the longies is so adorable. I love it. It has a nice stretch to it so it can fit from birth right till 7 weeks old. My husband is in love with the hat. He never has much to say about my cloth diapers but he printed a photo of our son wearing the crocheted hat and put it on the wall of his garage. That's where all his favorite photos go. ;)

I had no idea that by adding extra lanolin spray to the crotch would help with absorbancy.
ReplyDeleteCara, I haven't tried spraying lanolin in specific areas myself, but some people use lanolin spray to extend the time until they have to wash and lanolize again. Hope that helps!

ReplyDeleteI'm also new to wool - great to know you can add extra lanolin to add to the absorbancy. I'd never heard that before. So thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteI should try adding lanolin between washes to keep absorbency until dirty.
