Tummy Cross-Wrap (Frog Position)

{My Review}

The Chimparoo woven wrap was the first wrap baby carrier that I had ever tried. I was very interested in wraps as they looked so versatile and babies always looked so cozy in them.

There are seven gorgeous wrap color combinations from Chimparoo. It was difficult choosing the one I liked best. I finally settled on the Iris color combo as blue and purple are my favorite colors.

I have used many different structured carriers in the past and thought I was a pro at babywearing but I must admit I was intimidated when I first took the Chimparoo wrap out of the box. It is LONG, 4.5 meters or 177 inches long.

Chimparoo offers a free downloadable 38 page PDF file containing instructions for all of the knots possible with each wrap they carry. I skimmed through it and determined that the tummy cross wrap (frog position) would be the best to try with my newborn. I actually practiced with a teddy bear a few times while I was pregnant. Yes, I was that impatient to hold my new baby!

Once my son was here I tried it out right away. All wraps also comes with a DVD with videos demonstrating how to do the different wraps. I watched the video and started to attempt the tummy-frog position. Well, I will say that wraps in general do have a downfall when you also have a 2 year old. The entire time I was trying to follow the video's instructions, my toddler was running around playing peek-a-boo with the ends of the wrap and tugging on them! Can you say, frustrating?

I eventually got it wrapped after much sweating and grumbling. This was about 5 days postpartum. I bet you mamas can picture it.

We then went for a walk in the woods near my house and the wrap was extremely comfortable. The knots all stayed firm and the baby did not sag at all. Sagging in a carrier is something that really bothers me. I have a stretchy carrier of a different type and whenever my son is in it for any length of time he sags down and I am constantly adjusting his face because it gets buried in my cleavage. Not a very comfortable time for either of us.

Since the wrap is long, while you are wrapping, the two ends drag on the ground making it dirty quickly. This is kind of annoying but is an aspect of all wraps. The great thing about Chimparoo wraps is that they are machine wash and dry-able. I have washed it and it came out of the dryer looking as good as new. No color fading or pilling.

Since I was not used to the wrap I hesitated to bring it with me at first. I went for a 4 day vacation with my family and didn't bring it because I was worried I would forget how to wrap it properly and I wanted to go hiking. I brought the previously mentioned stretchy carrier and spent the entire hike staring at my chest to make sure my baby could breathe. I really wish I had brought my Chimparoo!

I love that this baby carrier can be used from birth to 4 years old. It is so important when buying something that you can get your money's worth out of it. 4 years of use is a great investment, not to mention you can use it with all of your children under 4. In my case I can use it with my newborn and with my 2 year old just by changing the knot.

After 2 months of use I can honestly say that I love this woven wrap. I have the tummy-frog position down pat and can wrap my baby up very quickly (normally more quickly than in the video review). I take it every where with me now. When I go shopping, visiting, hiking or walking in the woods. This baby carrier is great for any activity I want to do. It is one of my diaper bag essentials now. I never leave home without it.

The longest suspension bridge in the world. Coaticook, Quebec.

A wrap does have a high learning curve but once you have tried it a few times you will see how easy it actually is and how convenient it is to have a dozen different carriers in one. I have just perfected the tummy-frog carry and will now branch out into the other knots. I am excited to try it with my 2 year old, he loves to be in a baby carrier and I am sure he will enjoy being snugly wrapped against me.

Unless you use the cradle position I find it hard to breastfeed in the carrier. Since it is not stretchy you cannot easily adjust the carrier for nursing. I have done it but it wasn't hands free nursing and I was not very comfortable. Also, if you do not do the wrap correctly you have to completely unwrap and rewrap to get it right. So the fabric does have its pros and cons.

The Chimparoo woven wrap is a very high quality carrier. It is made right here in Canada, which is rare to find these days. This wrap costs $94.00 CDN which seems like a lot until you consider it is still less expensive than other carriers and you can use it for the first FOUR years of your baby's life. You are also not confined to just one type of carry. You can use the same carrier on your back, front or hip. I definitely believe the Chimparoo Canadian-made woven wrap is worth the money. If you don't think a wrap is for you check out the other awesome six carrier types made by Chimparoo, they have something for everyone!

How wonderful that they're able to be used for up to four years. Most baby gear lasts for such a short time!

  2. Love the wrap! I have a didymos similar colors to yours but it's a tad too short. I'd love to get one of their x-long wraps.

  6. I love how long woven wraps can be used and how soft the material is. I just had a similar wrap turned into 2 slings but I think I would still love a wrap for my granddaughter. Thanks for the review and the giveaway - you make it look so easy! robin phillips-knotts

  20. I LOVE it! We have a ring sling that I've used with my second child until the fifth one and after 10 years now, it's starting to show some wear. I love it, but I know that it's time to get a wrap! I love that this one has the embroidery so you know where to put the center at. I would really like to see you put your 2 year old in! Our baby just turned 1, and we have another that is going to turn 3 soon. (And DH wants MORE!)

Congrats on starting your babywearing/wrapping journey!! I LOVE using my wrap... I have a Storch that I use every day! I lug it into my car & back into the house so I can use it all the time; a second wrap would come in handy so I never forget it. Good luck, everyone!!
