Social Mission
- Pad donations. For over a decade, Lunapads has been donating washable pads to women's groups to support their fundraising efforts. We also regularly donate washable pads to women in developing nations. Our Pads4Girls campaign, in partnership with individuals and numerous NGOs, supplies washable pad kits to girls in developing nations. Imagine1Day is just one of many examples of groups working to help girls who would otherwise be missing school because they lack of adequate menstrual supplies.
- Mentoring women entrepreneurs in our community. We regularly invite women wanting to start their own businesses (particularly green ones!) to our office to interview us about our experience, ask questions and generally bounce ideas around. We provide leads, contact and advice.
- Business community support. We are members of the Green America Business Network and the Social Venture Network, as well as our local and online Better Business Bureaus and a local social-mission business support group.
- Volunteerism in action. Madeleine is a volunteer Mentor with the Women’s Enterprise Society of British Columbia and the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs and Suzanne is an advisory board member, former treasurer and honored lifetime member of the Georgia Strait Alliance, a BC marine conservation organization.

{My Review}
I was very excited to try out Lunapads. I had heard many great things about them and love that they are a Canadian company that helps out so many women from around the world. All of their pads are made in Canada!
Lunapads did not disappoint. The heavy pad, wing liner and insert are a VERY absorbent combination. I started using them once I returned from the hospital after my son was born. My heaviest flow was of course while I was in the hospital for two days but when I got home I definitely still needed a postpartum pad.
The heavy flow pad with wing liner and extra insert is definitely an overnight pad. I used it overnight more than any of my other pads. If all three components were used together, I found it much too bulky and noticeable to wear during the day. At 14 inches long and super thick, it can be seen through your pants from the back or front. I did not have a super heavy postpartum flow so I had the choice of wearing thinner pads for daytime. If I had an extremely heavy flow than I'm sure I would have been very grateful for the extra protection even if it showed. FYI, the heavy disposable pads I was wearing in the hospital showed from the back and front also.

Even though the combination is very thick, it is actually quite comfortable. The insert is very soft and the whole pad conforms to your shape. Much more natural feeling than disposable pads.
The wing liner does not have snaps on the wing like the base pad does. I find this a little strange, as you can see from my video above, the wings are supposed to lay against your thighs not wrap around your underwear. I found this a little awkward, it felt like it bunch against my thighs. The Lunapad leaked once or twice along the top sides, I think it was transfer from the liner wings.
The thing I love most about Lunapads is the ability to customize the pad to your own flow. By adding or removing inserts and liners you can get the protection you need depending on where you are in your cycle. The pads seem expensive but because the base pad can be reused you only need to buy extra inserts and liners.
Right after giving birth I use the whole combination for protection but as the bleeding slowed I was able to use the pad three times before washing. Once with the insert, second time with the wing liner and a third time with just the base pad. Lunapads remind me of All-in-2 cloth diapers. You have the cover (base pad) and the lay-in inserts/liners. Reuse the base pad until soiled.
One design flaw that I found was that the rick-rack bands that hold the liners and inserts to the base pad get blood on them. So you have a fresh liner but the band is still dirty. I wish there was a way to hold the liners onto the pad from underneath so it stayed clean.
To summarize, the Lunapads postpartum pad is very absorbent and comfortable. It is noticeable through clothes if using all three components together. It leaked a couple times probably by wicking from the wing liner. Can be used in three different ways saving the expense of buying many base pads.
Lunapads is a wonderful company that helps girls and women from around the world. It is great to know that when you buy your menstrual products from Lunapads, you are buying Canadian made pads and are supporting a company that really cares about women.

I really could have used these after baby was born; I had a lot of stitches to heal and I could have filled this with crushed ice instead of an insert!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Luna pads were customizable!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't realized that you could use them multiple times, like an AI2 diaper! That's great!
ReplyDeleteI love that Lunapads works with NGOs to provide pads in developing nations - what great work!
ReplyDeleteI loved a lot of things. One I LOVE the pattern and how long they are. :D I also like how you can add an insert. Perfects.

I love that you can add inserts, and the fact that they are reusable! I didn`t realize that Lunapads post partum ones had inserts that could be changed - most companies I have seen have just a single pad, so you need to buy so many of them.
ReplyDeleteI love that you can customize the absorbancy to your needs inserts!
ReplyDeleteI love that you can customize them. These would make great postpartum pads!! I also love that you can add an insert if you want too
ReplyDeleteI am so glad they are customization of absorbency. I also liked that you mention that they can be used for incontinence. Because this is what I have to consider when getting a pad will it work for that.
ReplyDeleteThis is just a general comment about good cloth pads because they breath better and are more natural that paper pads. For those that have to wear bladder back up everyday. I in my own use have found that I get a lot fewer bladder infections when I where cloth pads than when I wear the paper kind. Plus because they are much softer I do not have as much irritation issues.
I wish I would have had these when I had my son! I love that you can customize absorbency and that the base pad can be reused.
ReplyDeleteI've been dying try try out Lunapads because you can customize them. Love the pictures! It's obvious how easy they are to use!
ReplyDeleteI love how they look so easy to use! I also like how you can choose your absorbency.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of an extra heavy pad that can be used three times! Would have been great for postpartum bleeding after having my boys.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had known about these when I had my kids. I bled for what seemed like forever and kept having to buy more disposable pads when I ran out and I never knew which absorbency I would need. With these I could have customized the pad as the bleeding lessened.
ReplyDeleteI love the customizability! And I never knew about Lunapads' charity efforts. I'm more likely to support a company with a social conscience.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool that you can customize the absorbancy. I also like that they have a donation program.
ReplyDeletewhat a great company!! i love that they donate pads to women in need. the pads are beautiful and beautifully made! i think it's a bit amusing that they make thong pads.. that's the last thing i feel like wearing when i'm on my mooncycle, but to each her own i suppose! ;)
ReplyDeleteThey look so much moree comfortable than any normal pads,
ReplyDeleteI love all the donations they do!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize they could be customize, that is a good feature.
ReplyDeleteLove that you can customize absorbancy... too bad I didn't think of these after having my baby girl, we were doing crazy amounts of diaper laundry anyways!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that you could customize absorbency, that is awesome. I plan on buying some cloth pads after this next baby is born. Last time I used the disposable pads and they were soooooo uncomfortable. I think I would heal a lot quicker with something cloth that is breathable.

I have not made the switch to washable pads and I appreciate your very thorough review. I like that the company donates to such great causes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great company! I really could've used cloth pads after my first was born, when I was all stitched up. Fortunately I had Lunapads by the time #2 was born!
ReplyDeleteI love that they donate to girls in developing nations. This is much better, I believe, than disposable pad companies donating to the same places.
ReplyDeleteIt had never occurred to me to wear all 3 pieces together for a heavy overnight. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteLove u can customize as cycle changes. Chittumsh@ aol.com
ReplyDeleteI had never thought about using just the base pad to increase the time before changing. Great idea!
