{My Review}
I have to say that prefolds and covers are my favorite way to diaper a newborn. This has been the first time I have used prefolds for any length of time and I absolutely love it. You can get a great fit and no leaks!
If you are new to cotton prefolds remember to wash and dry them 4 to 5 times before their first use to ensure all oils are removed and they have reached a good absorbancy. The more you use and wash the more absorbent they become.
I was sent a newborn-size prefold (6 to 10 lbs) and an infant-size prefold (8 to 18 lbs) to review from Sweet Pea Diapers. My son was 8 lbs 14 oz at birth so I was really happy to be able to try both sizes as their weight ranges overlap.
The newborn-size fit for one month. He was probably around 11.5 lbs when I couldn't Snappi it anymore. So 1.5 lbs more than the stated weight range. I can still use it tri-folded in my size small covers though.

The infant-size still fits at 12.5-13 lbs and 2 months old. He still has a lot of room in that prefold so it will last for a good while longer. It is too long to tri-fold in his size small covers so it has to be Snappi-ed until I get bigger covers.

I could use the newborn-size prefold from birth, it fit well underneath the umbilical cord stump. I was only able to start using the infant-size at about a month old. When my son got too big for the newborn-size, the infant-size fit.
The infant-size is supposed to fit at 8 lbs but my son was almost 9 lbs at birth and that size was much too bulky. I could put it on him and Snappi it but there was definitely an excess of material. I would recommend having both sizes if you want to cloth diaper from birth. Newborn-size for the first month or so and infant-size for 11 lbs and up.

The only thing I do not like about the Sweet Pea prefolds are the tags. They are very large and scratchy. You have to be careful how you fold the diaper so it does not lay against the baby's skin and irritate it. I have folded it a few times and was about to Snappi when I realized that the tag would lay against his skin so I had to re-fold. The prominent tag is beneficial for resale though because the buyer will always be able to tell which brand it is. This is not the case with all prefolds.
[UPDATE] Sweet Pea prefolds no longer have the large tags.
The Sweet Pea prefolds are very soft when washed and dried. They quilt up nicely and are very absorbent. I never had leaks when using prefolds. I highly recommend anyone thinking of using cloth diapers from birth to buy prefolds and covers. They have a large weight range since you can use them Snappi-ed or tri-folded (like a pad). It is also a very inexpensive way to cloth diaper. Spending $35 or $40 on Sweet Pea prefolds works out to about $3.00 a diaper plus the price of covers. It is not as cute as using all-in-one diapers but if you want a great base for your newborn stash than prefolds are it!

I am still learning about prefold and covers, but it is definitely something I am leaning towards with our next child. I also love how inexpensive they are
ReplyDeleteI have some Sweetpea covers and an AI3 but had no idea they made and sold prefolds! Thanks for a great review. Anne Sweden
ReplyDeleteMy baby is due in Dec so I am soaking up all the info I can get. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love sweet pea pockets, covers and AI3s! I've never been totally sold on prefolds (no particular reason) and have yet to try the prefolds and would love to get my hands on a few!
ReplyDeleteI use prefolds but haven't tried this brand. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI have learned that prefolds are a great option for newborns. They are more economical than buying all those NB size diapers
ReplyDeleteChris Mattatall I really love the way prefolds fit and the versatility of them is wonderful. they can used with fasteners or placed in covers or used in pockets which saves a lot of money. I also find they are the easiest to clean and dry thumbs up :)
ReplyDeleteI learned that new borns and perfold are a great combo
ReplyDeleteI learned that the newborn size prefolds will fit a larger newborn. My babies are born at almost 9lb so I've always been curious about that.

I love that the newborn and infant prefolds have an overlapping size range. That helps to get a perfect fit!
ReplyDeleteI learned that you need to wash them 4 to 5 times before the first use!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Sweet Pea was a Canadian company!
ReplyDeleteI would love to use prefolds in the newborn stage when I have another child! I have started to reach for them more and more, but I don't have any newborn prefolds. :(
ReplyDeleteI prefer prefolds in the first few months for their versatility and cost-efficiency. I really like that Sweet Pea is Canadian too!
ReplyDeleteIt is good to know what kind of diapers are good for newborns especially about being able to protect the stump. thanks for a great review terri.moore30@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI love that the newborn prefolds fit longer than mentioned. I was scared to use prefolds with my first because I was scared they'd fit for a very short period.
ReplyDeleteI love that they took away the large tag. I'm planning on starting out with prefolds when our baby is born (later this month!), and I can't wait!
ReplyDeletei love that the newborn prefold is the same thickness as the other sizes, other brands have less absorbency for a newborn but i think they actually need more!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved prefolds on my daughter when she was a newborn, guess I am not the only one!
ReplyDeleteI learned that you need to wash and dry the cotton prefolds 4 to 5 times before their first use to ensure all oils are removed and they have reached a good absorbancy. rustysrambles(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI am having baby #2 in November and really want to use prefolds to diaper him! I have never heard of this brand before and they sound nice and fluffy and absorbent. It's nice to hear that you haven't had any leaks and I really appreciate the size comparisons! I was debating not buying newborn sizes, but I think it will be worth it, since my 1st son was just under 8lbs.
ReplyDeleteI love the affordability of prefolds. I just got a couple for the first time this week and am still trying to get the hang of it. But I'm really loving them.
ReplyDeleteI used prefolds and covers with my newborn, and really liked it! I really like the green colored edge! I am having another baby in January, so these would be great additions to my stash!

I learned that sweet pea prefolds have different color of stitching around the outside to indicate what size they are.

I love prefolds and hope to win these to try out!
ReplyDeleteI started CD-ing later so I am always looking for newborn options for the next one. Sounds like prefolds and covers are an inexpensive way to go. I love Sweet Pea Diaper Covers and it sounds like the prefolds are nice too!
ReplyDeleteNice review - I appreciate that you gave an honest opinion about the tags (even though it's no longer an issue). I'm planning to use cloth diapers when I have this baby, my first, but I haven't done a lot of research yet. I liked seeing how prefolds can be used alone with Snappis or folded to fit in a cover.
