{My Review}

I was really excited to try the KoalaKin Nursing Pouch. I have a 2 year old and a 4 month old. I really need to have my hands free when dealing with my very rambunctious toddler. He is the kind of boy that will get into anything and everything.

I don't know how many times I have been confined to my chair nursing my baby and look over my shoulder and see my toddler sitting in the middle of my kitchen table. Or raiding the refrigerator. Or grabbing the phone off the counter and dialing numbers. Or, or, or...

Ya, I definitely have my hands full.

So when I got the chance to review the KoalaKin, I could not wait for it to arrive in the mail.

I can definitely nurse in the KoalaKin and I can even stand up and walk around while wearing it. I cannot be completely hands-free however. I can't always get it tight enough to hold my son close enough to my breast. He latches but pulls away. I contacted the KoalaKin creator, Vivian, and she said that some women do have this problem and often placing a folded burp cloth behind the baby's head solves it. I think the problem is caused by small breast size. I tried using a folded receiving blanket and it brought him in closer but didn't always get a great latch. It is much easier to nurse on my right side than my left for some reason.

So when I use the KoalaKin I just support my baby's head with my arm. I can move around my house and use one hand to complete tasks and get my toddler out of trouble. I really like being able to stand up while nursing. Its seems that as soon as I sit down to nurse, the phone rings or someone comes to the door. With the KoalaKin I am not stuck in my chair.

I try to place a receiving blanket under my baby's cheek as well. This is to keep spills off of the pouch. The KoalaKin is machine washable but it says to not wash too often. Spot clean as necessary. I washed mine in the machine and then air dried it. There were no problems and looked as good as new.

With the KoalaKin I can easily take my baby out if he falls asleep while nursing. I just unsnap the top shoulder clasp, take him out and lay him in his crib without waking him.

One thing to think about is nursing shirts or layering your tops. When you use the KoalaKin and you lift your shirt to breastfeed then your entire belly is showing if you are walking around your house. No worries if you are alone but I personally don't want my post baby belly hanging out for my mail man to see. So, I try to wear nursing shirts (like the one in my video) while using the nursing pouch.

My main problem is forgetting to actually put the KoalaKin on before sitting down to nurse. I recommend leaving it out in plain sight so you remember each time you need to breastfeed.

Now that my son is 4 months old and nurses quickly, normally only 10 minutes every couple of hours, I don't use the KoalaKin as much as I would have when he was a newborn. Newborns often nurse for 30 minutes or more at a time, throughout the day and night.

With my first son I spent the first couple months sitting in my lazyboy watching movie after movie because ALL he wanted to do was breastfeed and sleep on me. If I had had the KoalaKin, my house would have been a lot cleaner, that's for sure.

I think the KoalaKin would make a great baby shower gift. It is ideal for newborns and can continue to be used until the baby is 35lbs! If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed and you have other children, the KoalaKin would be a great help.
