30 Day Read-To-Your-Child Challenge

Books, Reading, Children

If you are like me then your children have a ton of beautiful books that are just sitting on a shelf. I read to my kids but not every day and with no set schedule. Literacy and reading to my children are very important to me but life often gets in the way.

Therefore, I am issuing a challenge to all my fellow parents.

READ TWO BOOKS TO YOUR CHILDREN,
EVERY DAY,
FOR 30 DAYS!

No matter what, you have to read at least 2 books a day for a month. Read more to them if you wish but make your minimum. The books can be of any length and you can participate with kids of any age.
I will be reading to my 28 month old and 6 month old sons.

If you do not have 60 books at home: try the local library, go to second hand book stores, do book exchanges with other parents, or reread the ones you have.

They say it takes a month to create a habit.
My hope is that once I develop the routine of reading to my kids every single day then that routine will continue after this challenge is over. Hopefully my son will start asking to be read to and will want to sit and listen to the story rather than taking off with the book to play with it.

You can start this challenge whenever you wish. It does not have to be today. Once you pick your starting date, continue for the full 30 days.

The 30 Day Read-To-Your-Child Challenge is a great way to kick off the new year and develop a wonderful new habit that will hopefully continue throughout their childhood.

Check-in throughout the challenge on my Facebook wall or leave comments here on the blog letting us know how you are doing, which books you have read and how your children are liking it.

Please share this challenge with your family and friends and hopefully ALL of our children will benefit!

Do you accept my challenge?

Who will you be reading to?

  1. This is great! We might have 60 books, but K is little enough she just wants the same ones over and over, lol.

  2. This is part of our bedtime routine. CelloDad is very good at it, and loves it so much that I expect when our children go to college he will be reading books to me....

    1. Good for you! I had planned to but my 2 year old would never sit still. With this challenge I hope to make it a routine for all of us.

  5. I accept your challenge! We have 5 kids aged 7, 6, 4, 3 & 2-years old. We already do a lot of reading with our kids, but I definitely support such an initiative.

  7. We read 2 books before bed every night. So for it to be a challenge we would have to read 2 books before bedtime. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. My son is 3.

    1. See, that is the kind of routine I want for my boys! I plan on reading one as soon as he wakes up in the morning and one before bed. That way my 2 year old would be settled enough to actually listen.

  8. I'll do my best, we do read aloud to our daughters but at 7&9 they often want their own quiet reading time

  13. Reading is so important. I have always read to my kids and now it's hard to get a book (or Kindle) out of my 13 year old son's hands. He brings his Kindle in the car even when we're just running to the store.

  14. What a fantastic challenge! This is something I really want to get more disciplined about doing with my 17 month old. Thanks for the inspiration!

  15. Great challenge! We read before nap and bedtime each day, but we can always stand to squeeze in a few more each day.

  16. We can not get through a day without reading at least 5 books! Some nights I read the same book 3-4 times, it gets a little old for me but the LO loves it.

  17. We read quite a few books most days but I have been trying to be more intentional about it. I am working on reading every book any of my kids bring me, every time they ask for one. We have found that cutting tv out of our lives has made reading happen more.

  18. Fantastic! We're mainly reading the same books (over and over and over) again, but maybe this will make it possible to read something else for a change. :-)
